Glen Ellen sits in the narrow part of the valley under Sonoma Mountain, and the properties here run from small cottages near the old village center to ranches of ten acres or more climbing toward Jack London State Historic Park. Many owners want a sauna that feels like part of the land, set among the oaks with a view of the mountain, and on bigger parcels there is usually room to put it wherever the light is best.
The Nuns fire in 2017 burned through a large part of this community, and a lot of the homes we visit are rebuilds finished to the county's ember-resistant standards. We carry that same approach into the sauna. The vents get fine metal mesh, the roof is a Class A material, and we keep the ground around the building clear of brush. Glen Ellen is unincorporated, so permits go through Permit Sonoma in Santa Rosa and not the City of Sonoma. Parcels close to Sonoma Creek or Calabazas Creek can carry riparian setbacks, and a lot of properties rely on wells and septic, which limits where a trench or a concrete pad can go. We pull the parcel records before the first visit so we know which of those apply. Hillside lots up toward the state park may also sit in a mapped high fire hazard area, which adds a clearance check for any stovepipe.
Access can be the hard part. Long gravel drives, steep switchbacks and narrow bridges over the creek do not suit a big delivery truck, so we sometimes stage lumber at the road and carry it in on a compact loader. Summer afternoons in the valley get hot and winter nights drop close to freezing, which is a good argument for thick insulation in the walls and roof.

How much does a home sauna installation cost?
For most Sonoma County homes, a finished job runs from about nine thousand dollars for a compact indoor room to thirty thousand or more for a cabin with a wood stove and a long trench out from the house. The price includes the heater, wiring, permits and finish carpentry. Rural sites with slopes or long access lanes cost more to build on, and we give you a fixed number once we have walked the property.
What are the electrical requirements for a sauna heater?
A typical home electric heater of 6 to 9kW wants its own 240-volt circuit, usually 30 to 50 amps depending on the model, with no other loads on it. Infrared rooms draw much less and some plug into a standard 120-volt outlet. On ranch properties we also look at what else shares the panel, since a well pump starting up can trip a breaker that is already near its limit.
Can I have a sauna in my backyard?
Usually, yes. The things that decide it are setbacks from property lines and creeks, how much of the lot is already built on, septic and well locations, and fire hazard zoning.
