Sonoma Custom Saunas plans, frames and finishes saunas for households between the Carneros hay fields and the Mayacamas ridge, and out as far as the coast at Bodega Bay. We hold a California Class B license, we carry insurance and a bond, and the carpenters who pour your footings are the same people who hang the door and set the last bench board. Nobody else gets handed a piece of the job halfway through.
Most of our clients are after one of two things. Some want traditional saunas with a stove, a pile of stones and a ladle, running hot and dry until someone throws water and the air turns soft. Others want infrared saunas because they warm up fast, run on a small circuit and suit a spare bedroom in a town house. Plenty of valley families end up with a hybrid room that does both, and we build all three from the same shop.
Building in this county has its own set of rules. After the Tubbs and Nuns fires in 2017, and the Kincade and Glass fires that followed, a lot of homes from Fountaingrove to Glen Ellen were rebuilt under Chapter 7A, the ember-resistant building standard, and a new backyard structure next to one of those houses has to respect the same thinking. We use metal mesh on vents, noncombustible roofing and clear space around the building. Ranch properties bring their own questions: a well pump on the same panel, a septic field you cannot drive over, and a gravel lane the delivery truck may not like in February.
Power is the other local issue. PG&E safety shutoffs have left whole valleys dark for days during fire weather, so more of our clients ask for outdoor saunas heated with wood. A good wood stove heats a cedar room with no electricity at all. We site the flue, size the spark arrestor and talk you through the county burn-day rules so the stove gets lit on days it is allowed, and we put an electric heater in instead when the lot or the neighbours make wood a poor fit.
Wood choice matters to us. Benches and wall boards are clear western red cedar or hemlock, which stay cool to the touch and do not weep sap. Redwood has deep roots in this county and we love it on exterior siding, but it can bleed tannins onto skin and towels when it gets hot, so it rarely goes inside the room. Reclaimed barn wood cladding from old Sonoma dairies is a common request, and on the right building it looks like it has always been there.

It also means telling you plainly when a smaller build is the better one. Sometimes that is a cold plunge install next to a room you already own, and sometimes it is a sit-down session over a sheet of paper for custom sauna design before anyone buys a board.
Why It Matters
A sauna packs 180 degrees, splashed water and a large electrical load into a tight wooden box, and out here you can add wind, wildfire smoke and a long dry season. A careless build shows up in predictable ways. A stove flue too close to an oak canopy is a fire risk in September. An undersized circuit trips every time the well pump kicks on. A vapor barrier with gaps lets moisture into the framing, and on a foggy west county lot that turns into rot faster than most people expect. What Affects the Cost
We quote a fixed price after we have been to the property. These are the items that push that price up or down the most:

- Lumber grade, where clear cedar costs far more than knotty stock or hemlock.
- Heat source, with a wood stove adding a flue, spark arrestor and clearances.

- Your panel, and whether it also carries a well pump, EV charger or battery system.
- Fire-safe detailing on lots in high hazard zones.
- How much glass you want, because glazing loses heat and calls for a larger heater.

How much does a home sauna installation cost?
For most Sonoma County homes, a finished job runs from about nine thousand dollars for a compact indoor room to thirty thousand or more for a cabin with a wood stove and a long trench out from the house. The price includes the heater, wiring, permits and finish carpentry. Rural sites with slopes or long access lanes cost more to build on, and we give you a fixed number once we have walked the property.
What are the electrical requirements for a sauna heater?
A typical home electric heater of 6 to 9kW wants its own 240-volt circuit, usually 30 to 50 amps depending on the model, with no other loads on it. Infrared rooms draw much less and some plug into a standard 120-volt outlet. On ranch properties we also look at what else shares the panel, since a well pump starting up can trip a breaker that is already near its limit.
Can I have a sauna in my backyard?
Usually, yes. The things that decide it are setbacks from property lines and creeks, how much of the lot is already built on, septic and well locations, and fire hazard zoning. Coastal lots near Bodega Bay add another layer of review. We look up your parcel before you spend any money so there are no surprises later.
Can I install a sauna without a permit?
Some small detached buildings are exempt from a building permit in California, generally one-story structures of 120 square feet or less, and many barrel saunas fall under that size. How do traditional saunas compare to modern infrared saunas?
A traditional room heats the air to somewhere around 170 to 195 degrees, and you can pour water on hot stones for a wave of steam. People after a quick weeknight session often prefer infrared, and a hybrid room gives you both.
How do I choose the right sauna for a small backyard?
Start with the space you can spare after setbacks, then think about how many people will use it at once. A four-foot-deep cube or a short barrel fits many town lots in Petaluma, Cotati or Sonoma. Pick a spot you can reach in bare feet, keep it clear of overhanging branches, and check that a trench for the power line will not cross a sprinkler main or a septic line.
What should I look for when purchasing a backyard cold plunge?
Look for a chiller that can pull the water down to the 40s even in a hot August afternoon in the valley, plus good filtration and a way to sanitise the water. An insulated tub with a tight cover saves power. Put it in the shade if you can, on a level pad with a drain nearby, and make sure the electrical has GFCI protection.
